inspirations

One of the great benefits of learning how to read and understand rhythms is being able to transcribe the recorded performances of great drummers. I've learned an enormous amount by doing this and have transcribed a fair amount of grooves, fills, and entire songs ever since I learned how. It takes your understanding and appreciation to a new level, and you start to fully hear the track.

This may come as a shock to some, but there are many other drummers out there who know how to read music and rhythm. These pages are for you, and I hope they inspire you like they have inspired me. Anyone that is familiar with standard drum set notation should be able to read these pages. They are hand written, and legible for the most part.

FU BU KI

Bill Bruford on drums

From Kazumi Watanabe's album SPICE OF LIFE TWO

Bruford delivers a tight performance on this track which shifts through different time signatures and figures. It's solid, and a great track to practice playing in shifting meters with.

THAT VOICE AGAIN

Manu Katche on drums

From Peter Gabriel's SO album

The ever graceful Manu Katche plays one his most musical and intense fills inside this passage. It's basically the second bridge of the song (before the last chorus). Amazing.

LED BOOTS INTRO

Narada Michael Walden on drums

From Jeff Beck's "WIRED" album

This is the insane drum intro to LED BOOTS which should need no introduction. This is old school-in-your-face fusion drumming (in the vein of Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever). It's intense, loose, and he just SLAMS those open high hats. Listen to it loud.

BEST WESTERN

Steve Jordan on drums

From John Scofield's Electric Outlet album

Kind of an obscure track, but any fan of early John Scofield will know the tune. It's a slow half time feel and Steve Jordan is simply stunning. The subtle snare drum work in the middle section is amazing, and played with grace.

Battle For Britain (The Letter) DRUM SOLO

Zachary Alford on drums

From David Bowie's Earthling album

Zachary Alford plays some amazing drums on this album, and on this track, a bit of a solo. It happens around the 2:53 mark, and is pretty crazy. There's some intense drum programming, a weird piano solo, and strange industrial sounds going on underneath, and he develops a quick solo amongst all of this madness. Very tasteful and spontaneous sounding.

D.I.Y

Jerry Marotta on drums

From Peter Gabriel's 2nd album

Here's a track from Peter Gabriel that flows freely between lots of odd meters. Jerry Marotta's groove is solid and he deceptively keeps a steady quarter note pulse thoughout. Like some Beatles songs, you're not even aware that the meters are shifting because of how loose it's played. It's a good mid-tempo track to play along with if you want to work changing time signatures.
