2.9.2012 - "Let's Get Moving" now available on iTunes.
"Let's Get Moving" is my debut album of eclectic upbeat instrumentals for my film/tv work. It's a bit on the lighter side especially compared to the bombastic 'drums of death and destruction' that I've become known for.
You can listen to the tracks below via soundcloud, but if you would like to take them with you, please visit the
iTunes page

I had a great recording session with
@recordinghacks and
@RandyCoppinger doing a massive ribbon mic shootout on drum overheads. This
is a link to the introduction, and the links to our drum overheads session will be arriving shortly.
Once again I was invited by Matt Mcglynn of recordinghacks.com to check out and
review some microphones. I love any excuse to geek out on new recording gear. This time the mics were from Shure, and they were the new line of Beta mics for recording drums. I was able to get my friend (and great engineer/producer) Stan Katayama over to my recording studio and give his impressions with the mics as well.
Here is the review replete with lots of drumming recorded with the new mics, a totally ridiculous room-mic test, mic shootouts, music, and a video too.

Here you will

07.01.2010 - YouTube video "A Quiet Groove":
An experiment replacing the snare with a 14" floor tom, and no proper high hat. I often get inspired by different setups, and mixing things up a bit. This groove appeared soon after setting up a 26" Gothic Radius cymbal which compliments the toms.

06.17.2009 - Drumming Improvisation on YouTube
I first posted this video on Facebook, and after I received some kind responses there, I thought I might share this improv on YouTube. I recorded it at Bright Orange Studios a short while ago, and it is one of my attempts to make drumming melodic and musical:

The video for "Robin Hood, Where Are You Now?"by Phil Gates was just put up on YouTube. A good portion of it was shot at Bright Orange Studios by the G-Man. The song was written by Larry John McNally and produced/mixed by Matt Forger. I played drums on the track, as well as some serious cowbell:

08.20.2008 - Movie trailer madness!
It is movie trailer madness!
Here is the major movie trailer for Death Race. My percussive bit starts when the Universal logo splashes onscreen.

05.21.2008 - "Feedback" audio comic book by Stan Lee
I just finished working on the audio comic book "Feedback" written by Stan Lee (Dark Horse Comics). The superhero himself was in Bright Orange Studios where we did the mixing, and I placed some original music, and contributed sound design as well. Here's a bit from the official press release:
Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), the nation's largest educational audiobook library, has released its first audio comic book, Stan Lee's ''Who Wants to Be a Superhero?'' published by Dark Horse Comics. Lee, the world-famous co-creator of ''Spider-Man™,'' ''Iron Man™,'' ''X-Men™,'' ''Fantastic Four™'' and ''The Incredible Hulk™,'' among others, penned the comic book, which features the superhero ''Feedback.'' The ''Feedback'' character, created by Matthew Atherton and his wife Sarah Blevins, was the winner of Sci-Fi Channel's season one hit show, ''Who Wants to Be a Superhero?'' Atherton, an RFB&D volunteer, together with Lee, helped record the
audiobook at RFB&D's Hollywood recording studio. Atherton then enhanced the recording with sound effects and original music, written by Jon Mattox of Bright Orange Studios, located in Los Angeles.
Bright Orange Studios has been busy with all kinds of music projects; modern glam rockers Soho Vamp, country music (Ricky Lewis / Rod Harris), revival blues (Larry John McNally), orchestral rock (Geezer), and UNI has been overdubbing too.
I've written and recorded a new series of hybrid music cues for an upcoming compilation called BAD ASS DRUMS 4.0. I've put a few up here to check out.
01.31.2008 - Roy Z / Butch / Driver @ Bright Orange Studios
The multi talented producer/guitarist/songwriter Roy Z (Judas Priest, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson) was just in at Bright Orange Studios producing drum tracks for the long awaited Driver album. His drummer Reynold "Butch" Carlson came in with his old school metal drum set up replete with an intense china cymbal. We did 3 days of drum tracking and we used some experimental micing techinques including live reamping of the the drums. This gave some of the tracks some interesting color especially on the snare.
This album will rock, and speaking of rock, will also feature Rob Rock on vocals. Roy Z, you rule!
